Microsoft hopes to take on the growing importance of bitter rivals Apple and Google in the mobile phone market with a new range of its own mobile devices that focus on social networking.

Its new “Kin” range of mobile phones have slide-out qwerty keyboards – with the smaller device bearing an uncanny resemblance to the Palm Pre– and will be arriving in the US within weeks. British mobile phone users, however, will have to wait until the autumn when the Kin devices will be available on the Vodafone network.

Microsoft has been in the mobile phone market for almost a decade but has consistently failed to grab anything like the market share it has enjoyed in the PC world. Its share of the US smartphone market dropped to 15.1% in February from 19.1% in November, while Google’s Android platform has 9%, up from 3.8%, and Apple maintained its quarter share of the market, according to figures from Comscore.

With analysts convinced that the next generation of web users will most likely be accessing the internet on a mobile device rather than a desktop computer it has become increasingly crucial to Microsoft that it improve its mobile offering.

The new devices are a result of a project within Microsoft known as Pink and have been developed alongside the seventh version of Microsoft’s mobile phone software. Windows Phone Series 7 was announced back in February and several mobile phone manufacturers are already working on devices that use the new software.

But Microsoft finally seems to have learned that just developing good software does not lead to a winning mobile phone.

Apple has complete control over the iPhone, while even Google has decided in recent months that it needs more of a say in how the open standards mobile phone platform it has championed – called Android – is implemented.

Earlier this year Google launched its own phone, the Nexus One. It is manufactured by HTC but Google has controlled exactly how the device looks and works.

In a similar manner, the Kin devices are manufactured by Sharp but Microsoft has control over the software, online services and hardware. The phones are designed to make it easy for users to access Microsoft’s online services – including search engine Bing – as well as publish and share information with their contacts.

In the US the devices will be available on Verizon Wireless while in Europe, Vodafone will launch them in the autumn in Germany, Italy, Spain and the UK, with further markets to follow before the end of 2010.

“Vodafone is delighted to further its partnership with Microsoft, bringing our customers Microsoft’s latest innovation – KIN,” said Patrick Chomet, group director of terminals at Vodafone.

“Mobile social networking is increasingly having strong appeal for our customers. KIN has a unique and intuitive way of engaging with the user, enabling them easily to share experiences and stay in touch with their friends.”

Pricing information and local availability dates will be announced by the markets closer to the launch date.

Vodafone has both Kin phones under a one-year exclusive deal in Europe.

Of the two devices the Kin One is the smaller and has a 5 megapixel camera – the same as the Nexus One and better than the camera in the iPhone. The larger Kin Two has an 8 mega-pixel camera and can take high definition video.

With the youth market firmly in mind, both phones are designed to be able to take pictures in low light with image stabilization and a bright LumiLED flash.

<!  .style1 {font-size: 12px} -->Webcasting & Streaming Services

Live Event Streaming allows a user to broadcast a live event in real time on the Internet. This capability is one of the most unique and exciting applications of streaming media technology. Only Streaming Media allows a user to do a live broadcast or webcast in real time on the Internet.

Not only is the very concept of doing a live webcast an exciting and often perfect solution, it is also relatively easy to do: webcasting live can be accomplished by simply having a webcam or digital camera, a laptop or home computer, appropriate cabling, some free software, and a modest broadband connection.

Put all the elements together, and you are online live! At the other extreme, professional productions such as major music or sporting events can be broadcast to tens of thousands of viewers via their web browsers.

By utilizing our Live Event Streaming servers, you can reach a much wider audience across a much larger geographic area. The sights and sounds of your Live Event are then streamed from our Streaming Media servers to your viewers anywhere in the world using a standard internet connection.

There are already a substantial number of users who connect to the Internet using high speed bandwidth alternatives such as ISDN modems, DSL, dedicated T-1 access, cable modems or through their company’s network. The growth of these high-speed connection alternatives has already eclipsed standard 28.8 and 56K modem connections.

If you’d like current and future visitors to your web site who are connected to the Internet at higher speeds to be able to see higher quality video, we can specifically encode additional video clips which are meant for transmission and viewing at alternate speeds. In most cases, you will usually want your basic streaming video clip encoded for transmission to standard 28.8 or 56K modem users. Our charge for encoding alternate higher speed clips is only $25 per video clip.

If you have a need for high resolution video for stand-alone presentations on of your PC or Mac, we can also digitize your video into either AVI, QuickTime or MPEG formats and provide your digital video on CD-ROM.

File Sizes and Bandwidth Requirements

So that you can anticipate how much file storage space you’ll require when we encode your videos, here’s a chart which details file sizes based on video that has been encoded at different bandwidth speeds. Although these are some of the more popular choices, we can encode your videos using any bandwidth settings you specify.

Pioneer invited us to get a first look at its Advanced Design Concept TV last night before the start of the show. The 50-inch diagonal screen plasma measures just 9 millimeters thick—less than an iPod and way skinnier than anyother full-sized TV. (Sony’s Lilliputian OLED set notwithstanding.)

Like JVC’s thin LCD, the Pioneer does have a small dirty secret—a hump on the back that holds the electronics for the panel. But even
this is a mere 20-some millimeters thick.

Pioneer reps couldn’t remember the exact figure. And this is the real innovation.

Turns out 9 millimeters is about the same thickness of the glass panels inside all Pioneer’s current TVs. But the power supply and
extremely complex drive circuitry makes the whole thing about 100 millimeters (4 inches) thick. It’s not clear whether this also includes the power supply—probably the bulkiest component.

How did Pioneer do it? Well, they’re not saying. But there is clearly some serious foo involved. So when can you get it? Pioneer says it
won’t be out in the coming year, but they definitely will sell it—combined with their amazing new infinite contrast screen technology prototype (also revealed at CES) as soon as they can. My bet is sometime in 2009.—Sean Captain
